Cuando hacemos el gesto mecánico de abrir el grifo y tomamos un vaso de agua, no podemos llegar a imaginar lo que esto en si conlleva.  Simplemente paladeamos el agua y nada más.  Mas la realidad nos dice que casi nadie tiene información y por supuesto ni se preocupa de lo que el agua representa en nuestras vidas.  Algunos estudios coinciden en que la vida nació en el agua hace la friolera de 3.500 millones de años.  Ya esta mas que documentado que las primeras civilizaciones crecieron alrededor de los ríos y lagos.  Hasta el momento es irreemplazable la molécula formada por dos átomo de hidrogeno y uno de oxigeno existente en el 71 por ciento de la superficie de nuestro planeta.

Solo el 3 por ciento de ella es dulce, y de esa ínfima parte solo se puede utilizar el 1 por ciento para nuestro uso y consumo.  Mas debido al uso irracional y una explotación desigual, no sería descabellado ver peligrar la vida en nuestro planeta tanto para humanos, animales y plantas. Las terribles sequias que golpean algunas zonas de África, las inundaciones en Australia, la reciente catástrofe en Japón llenando los mares con componentes radiactivos.  Todo esto en síntesis nos están diciendo que las señales están ahí llamando a nuestra puerta.  Un estudio del Instituto Internacional para el control del agua advierte que el agotamiento incontrolado de las capas acuíferas representa un peligro para los alimentos.

El agua ha estado siempre codiciada como si fuese un botin de guerra.  Un caso reciente lo tenemos en la guerra de Iraq.  El principal propósito era controlar no solamente el petróleo, sino los grandes recursos hídricos de los ríos Éufrates y Tigris, torrentes caudalosos en unas de las zonas más áridas del planeta.  Es sabido que estos dos accidentes fluviales son motivos de conflicto entre Turquía, Siria e Iraq.  Asimismo el rio Nilo, una de las cuna de la civilización humana, es el principal problema entre Etiopia, Sudan y Egipto.

Otro conflicto lo tenemos en el rio Jordán y Litani en oriente medio debido a que Jordania, Israel y los territorios palestinos tienen casi agotados sus recursos acuíferos.  La meseta del Golán, territorio ocupado por Israel a Siria, es unas de las más importantes reservas de agua dulce en la región.  Mientras estos países sufren por el agua, en algunos hoteles de New York, algunas personas pagan 9 dólares por una ridícula botellita de agua mineral.  Como siempre las grandes multinacionales a través de una codiciosa comercialización del agua se hacen de oro.  Llegará un día no muy lejano en que el motivo de una nueva guerra no será el petróleo, sino el agua y los alimentos.  De momento comamos y bebamos, por si las moscas.

Molecules of Life

When we open the tap in the usual mechanical gesture and we drink a glass of water, we cannot begin to imagine what this simple act entails.  We simply taste the water and that’s it.  More so if the reality tells us that nearly no one has the information and will not be concerned with what water represents in our lives.  Some studies have coincided that no less that 3,500 million years ago, life had its birth in water.  It is well documented that the first civilizations grew around the rivers and lakes.  Until now, the molecule that is composed of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen, and that which extends over 71% of the earth’s surface, is irreplaceable. 

Only 3% of this water is fresh water, and of this extremely low percentage, only 1% can be utilized by us for our consumption.  In addition due to its irrational use and its unequal exploitation, it wouldn’t be a wild notion to think that life on this planet could be in danger, be it for humans, animals or plants.  The terrible droughts that have hit some areas of Africa, the flooding in Australia, the recent catastrophe in Japan that have filled the seas with radioactive components; all these events combined are telling us that the signs are very clear.  A  study carried out by the International Institute for the control of water has warned that the uncontrolled exhaustion of the aquiferous layers will represent a danger for food.

Water has always been sought after as if it were the fruits of war.  A recent case can be seen in the Iraq War.  The main purpose was for the control not only of petrol but also the great sources of water from the River Euphrates and Tigris, bountiful torrents in one of the most arid areas on the planet.  It is well known that these two accidental rivers had been the motives of conflict between Turkey, Syria and Iraq.  In the same manner, the River Nile, one of the cradles of human civilization, is the principal problem between Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt.

Other conflicts can be found in the Rivers Jordan and Litani in the Middle East, due to the fact that the water resources of Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories have been nearly used up.  The plateau of Golan, a territory occupied by Israel and Syria, is one of the most important fresh water reserves in the region.  While these countries are suffering for the lack of water, in some hotels in New York, some people are paying US$9 for a ridiculous bottle of mineral water.  Like always, the big multinationals, through its avaricious commercialization of water, have been making tons of money.  The day will arrive, not very far into the future, when the motive for a new war will not be petrol, but water and food.  For the moment, let’s eat and drink, while we can.
