JAZZ - My Drug of Choice

Confieso que unas de las cosas por la que aun mantengo mi amor por USA es su gran cine de los años 40.  Y por supuesto la música de Jazz, algo que me ha sido familiar desde mi temprana adolescencia.  No pasa ni un día que el influjo de esa música  me deje indiferente.  Son tantos los estilos y al mismo tiempo tan diferentes que resulta muy difícil no quedar subyugado con cualquiera de sus relevantes figuras.

El Jazz ha sido una música mestiza, que ha tenido por abuelo el ritmo africano y al mismo tiempo la música europea.  Si hablamos de Jazz vocal, hay tres nombres que han entrado en el Olimpo del Jazz, Billie, Ella y Sarac.  Qué tres monstruos, madre mía!  Sobre todo si me refiero a Billie Holiday.  La carne se me pone de gallina cuando en una noche de alcohol y melancolía oigo su sensual voz.  Entonces un nudo te se hace el lo más profundo de mi alma.  Y es que Billie vivió solo 44 años.  Pero lo vivió intensamente mezclando como si de un Coctel se tratara, amor y desamor, machismo, segregación racial, drogas, alcohol.

Si realizamos el sencillo ejercicio de cerrar los ojos e imaginamos a una cantante de Jazz, el resultado suele ser la imagen de Billie.  Y no es casual porque estamos hablando sencillamente de la mejor cantante  de Jazz que ha dado esta música.  Con ella, sensibilidad y melancolía siempre estaban entrelazadas.  Su descarnada vida era parte de los matices de su voz en los últimos años de su vida. 

Otra leyenda del Jazz la tenemos en la emblemática figura de Charlie Parker, un revolucionario del saxofón impulsor de la corriente Be Bop.  Desgraciadamente las drogas, la bulimia y el alcohol acabaron tempranamente con su fulgurante carrera.  Otro gran maestro fue el mesiánico  John Coltrane que con su obra maestra, A Love Supreme, ejerció una gran influencia al llenar con un contenido religioso esta sublime composición.  A pesar de su adición a las drogas su recuperación vino acompañada de una religiosidad y una bondad reflejadas en sus últimos trabajos.  Lastima que muriera a los 44años.

Otro innovador o iconoclasta fue Charles Mingus.  Este señor era la bomba, sobre todo para lo que yo creo es su obra maestra The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady.  Esto es sobrenatural.  Por último hay que decir que las drogas ha sido siempre una constante entre los músicos de jazz. Pocos pudieron librarse de esta tragedia que en muchos casos terminaron con sus vidas y sus fulgurantes carreras dejándonos huérfano de sus portentosos talentos.  Yo por supuesto les rindo homenaje cada día deleitándome con su música.

John Coltrane - simply sublime

I must admit that some of the things for which I still keep my love for USA are his great film of the 1940s.  And of course Jazz, which I have been familiar with since my early teens.  There has not been a day where the influence of this music leaves me indifferent.  There are so many styles and at the same time so different that it is very difficult to not be entranced by its prominent figures. 

Jazz has been a mixed music, which had descended from African and European music.  If we speak of vocal Jazz, there are three names that have entered into the Olympus of Jazz, Billie, Ella and Sarac.  What three giants, oh my God!  Especially if we are talking about Billie Holiday.  Gives me goose pimples, when during a night of alcohol and melancholy, I listen her sensual voice.  Then I feel a knot form in the depths of my soul.  Billie lived for only 44 years.  But she lived it intensely mixing as if it were a cocktail, love and heartbreak, machismo, racial segregation, drugs, alcohol.

If we simply close our eyes and think about a singer of Jazz, the result tends to be the image of Billie.  And it is no accident because we are talking about simply the best jazz singer that had existed.  With her music, tenderness and melancholy are always intertwined.  Her stark life was part of the nuances of her voice in the last years of her life.

Another legend of Jazz is the emblematic figure of Charlie Parker, a revolutionary of the driving sounds of Be Bop saxophone.  Unfortunately alcohol, drugs and bulimia ended his brilliant career prematurely.  Another great master was the Messianic John Coltrane with his masterpiece, A Love Supreme, with which he exerted great influence by filling this sublime composition with a religious content.  Despite his addiction to drugs, his recovery was accompanied by religion and a kindness that was reflected in his later works.  Too bad that he died at the age of 44.

Another innovator or iconoclast was Charles Mingus.  This man was the bomb, especially for, what I believe is his masterpiece The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady.  This is supernatural.  Finally, it must be said that drugs have always been a constant among jazz musicians.  Few could escape this tragedy, which in many cases have ended their lives and their fleeting careers, leaving behind their portentous talents.  I of course pay tribute to them every day in delighting myself with their music.
