BRAZIL - Stop Criminal Deforestation

Beautiful Amazon Rainforest
Jose Claudio Ribeiro Da Silva and his wife
Just less than a month ago, a few mercenaries assassinated one of the most representative leaders of the fight against the deforestation of the Amazon region.  In the most shameless manner, the gunmen try to silence the people’s voice.  The methods employed in this area begin with the harassment of the victims.  Them come the death threats and in the end the gunshots with total impunity.  Thousands of hectares of the Amazonian forests are being destroyed while the ever changing governments, first that of Lula, now that of Dilma Rouseff, do little to stop these crimes that affect thousands of poor families that live in the Amazonia of Brazil.
The person that was assassinated was called José Claudio Ribeiro da Silva y his wife was called Maria del Espiritu Santo.  What a beautiful name for such a great fighter.  Once the defender of nature said these words, “What they did to Mendes in Acre, leader for nature that was killed in 1988, they want to do the same to me.  What they did to Sister Dorothy Stang, American missionary that was killed in Para in 2005, they want to do the same to me.  I can be speaking to you today and in a month you may be reading about my death in the papers.”  How prophetic was that, unfortunately, the words of this great fighter.
Ze Claudio believed that killing trees amount to murder.  The deforestation of the Amazonia contributes greatly to climate change, making Brazil the fifth largest sources of emission of CO2 in the world.  At the same time, this climate change will lead to the destruction of the ecosystem in the Amazonia, in substituting the jungle with open spaces.  The consequences are tragic for the indigenous people that live there.  In 20 years from 1989 to 2009 in Brazil, the accumulated area deforested amount to 700,000 km sq.  Quite simply a crime of majestic proportion.  These are the riches of the Amazonia.  Meat, timber, gold, iron, water, gas, petrol, etc.  The womb of the Amazonia possesses all these treasures that are very sought after by the international markets.  The Amazonia is the jungle that receives the most rain on the planet.  It extends over 7 million km sq but it has already lost a fifth of its original area due to the effects of fire and deforestation.  Just counting the Brazilian Amazonia, there are 100 different indigenous tribes that have suffered total extinction or partial extinction, all due to the plans to colonise and develop during the past 30 years, the sad and cruel reality of a development plan that is stupid and inhumane.
I ask myself, is this the country that is going to organise the Olympic Games in 2016?  What has changed in this country?  After all, under Lula it seems that the economic growth had been nothing short of spectacular.  The middle class without doubt has seen their quality of life improve, but we know that there remains a great proportion of the population that still live in severe poverty, particularly in the rural areas.  It is in these areas that we can see the greatest inequality in society which still pervades Brazil.  The murder of these leaders demonstrate to us that in Brazil, it is still the military and the oligarchy that rule, the same people who are the lords of the land and the timber sector.
It is not too far fetched to say that Brazil is more like a giant with feet made of mud.  The Brazilian government and the multinationals are taking advantage of the enormous riches of the Amazonia, the political power and also economic power, and their influence has extended to the laws.  They are at the service of capitalism unfortunately.  All the big projects in the Amazonia will lead to a development that will never be in equilibrium, and will never be in the interests of the population.
