Although I am not the most suitable person to analyze the music of Bach, because I am a neophyte in this matter, I must admit that when I listen to the Passion of St Matthew, all the demons that reside within me seem to disappear like magic.  It is during those rewarding moments when I regain some of my lost spirituality.  This brings me back to the time of my adolescence, when my stay in the seminary was filled with the sacred music of Bach.  But now with passing of the years, when the illusion and the idealism have deserted you, it is extremely soothing to listen to this mythical piece again.  Of course this does not necessarily make me fall off the horse like the apostle Paul, nor have I regained the light.

But it does give me consolation during dark moments, and that comforts me.  Sometimes I believe that sacred music in general, is one of the few things that still make me struggle between me myself and my spirituality.  I believe that in the music of Bach, one perceives wisdom and faith at the same time.  Just to be able to listen to this music makes we feel thankful for having been born humans.  Without this condition we would never have known nor understood the essence of this wonder that is in the music.  The good thing about Bach is that you do not need any understanding of classical music.  The harmony of his works creates miracles, and the various movements transport you to a serenity that one has long since forgotten.
Leave aside your internal fights imposed by life itself.  Try to submerge yourself in the vital music of Bach.  It would be the best gift that you can give to yourself.  We squander half of our time with absurd ideologies, or with futile and miserable political leaders locked in their ivory towers.  Relax yourself and take in the calmness; spend time to listen to Bach with soul and heart.  Everything else will be trivial.  The legacy of Bach carries on after 300 years.  And if there are still traces of civilization 300 years on, the legacy will live on.  The organ maestro Richard Ingrans maintains that Bach is God, or that the genius of his music is evidence that there must be a God.  Pardon my audacity with this article; it is just that I always feel positive after listening to Bach.
