Even at 65 years old, I have to admit that a fleeting sensation of nostalgia fills my heart when I recall my first years in Barcelona. I am refering to the year 1961, when Barcelona was an incredibly beautiful city, open to the whole world.
The area of Paralelo was a festival for the senses, the Apollo Hall, Theatre Arnau. Of course it would be unforgivable to not cite the extremely famous El Molino with the equally ingenious Escamillo (a transvestite). And as an extra treat, we had the Jazzbore. It was amazing that we could listen to Miles David in concert, when he made his famous trumpet 'weep'. But, my dear readers, let's leap towards the 1970s with the Sirex and Mugtan, which was the Catalan equivalent of the Beatles and Rolling Stones.
We had the great Ocaña (a famous transvestite) and on a socia level we witnessed the great rebirth of the anarchist movement with the emblematic CNT. Of course, with the death of Franco, Barcelona transformed into the pioneer for Freedom. I will always remember the march in favour of the Statute of the Autonomy, which took place in San Boi de Llobregat, with the performances of the singer - songwriters Pi de la Serra, Raimon, Lluis Llach. But now with the passing of time, I realise that any time period that I have lived through in the past was not the best.
The present, ironically, is the best for me. This is due to the fact that I do not have to live there to witness how the political caste has destroyed and tainted the spirit of liberty and divided the people of Cataluña.
